Description
The dholak is the smaller, femine version of the dhol. It is usually about 35 cm long, with heads 20 cm in diameter. At weddings and religious gatherings, women beat the dholak and sing. No auspicious occasion is complete without songs sung to the accompaniment of this instrument. It's common to see one woman beating the dholak and another striking the body of the drum with a spoon to add to the music. Rarely, the drum is decorated with tassels.
